First Impressions Kind of…
I wrote “kind of” because this is not the first time I played the game. The first time was about 3 years ago when the game was part of PS Plus free monthly games. Decided to check out because it was a free game to play and I loved it. This is also the first introduction I have to 11 bit studios, one of my favorite video game publisher and developer.
This game is not like other war-type games. It takes you to a different perspective of war, through the eyes of a civilian. You scavenge through your war-torn city looking for supplies, food, and weapons.
You start off with 3 characters from a variety of characters. Each with their own strengths, faults, and story. As you progress through the game you learn more about your characters. This makes me get invested with these people, learn what they are about, and their life before the war. I don’t want these people to die and not because they are my playable characters, but because they feel real.
Keeping a realistic approach to the game, your action has an effect on your people. Action like killing and stealing can cause your character to be depressed. Which will cause your character to be bed-ridden all day and possibly leaving the group. It’s such a unique mechanic that I haven’t seen before and removes the romanticism of war we see in games and real life. Because guess what? War sucks, it sucks for the people fighting in it and the people caught in the middle.
I feel that it is appropriate in some weird way to play it now because of what is happening in my country, the USA. With the domestic terrorists raiding the Capital Building to overthrow democracy. Them wanting to have a civil war because of their bigoted views, inability to accept consequences, and accepting truth and facts. It’s crazy and scary to witness. And I hope for a civil war not to happen because I do not want to experience it first-hand.
